  3.      reality. But the ways in which the artist and the modern 
  4.      scientist employ sense impressions to create their 
  5.      independent worlds are fundamentally different, and the 
  6.      phenomenal development of science depended partly on a 
  7.      separation of science from art.

  9.      This is only to say that what began as a separation of 
  10. the senses in science became the ground of all artistic 
  11. opposition. The artist struggled to retain and to regain the 
  12. integral, the interplay of sense in a world that was seeking 
  13. madness by the simple road of isolation of the senses. As was 
  14. indicated in the first pages of this book, the theme of King Lear  
  15. is precisely what Nef is describing as the origins of modern 
  16. science.
